23 Mt Everest Facts Everyone Should Know

Mt Everest is the highest mountain in the world. It stands at the border between Nepal and China in the middle of the Himalayas and receive a huge crowd of people either trying to climb to the summit or trekking to its base camp.

We have compiled a list of Mt Everest facts which everyone should know. They include basic information about the mountain to mind-blowing feats and things.

1. The elevation of Mt Everest is 8,848 m (29, 035 ft).

2. It was formed about 60 million years ago.

3. Its most dangerous part is Khumbu Icefall.

4. At the mountain, the wind can reach speed over 200 mph and the temperature can drop to -80F.

5. It has different names. In Nepali, it’s called Sagarmatha, and in Tibetan, it’s called Chomolungma.

6. It was first climbed in 1953 by Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary.

7. In his autobiography, Tenzing acknowledged that Hillary reached the summit first, but Hillary said it was of no importance who stepped first on the summit because the achievement belonged to both of them equally.

8. There are two routes to climb Mt Everest. From Tibet in the north and from Nepal in the south.

9. If you want to climb, then it will cost you more than $30,000.

10. Since 1953, over 4000 people have summited to the top.

11. The death toll is somewhere above 250.

13. Each year it grows taller by approx. 4 mm.

14. If you are at the peak, you breathe in about the third of the amount of oxygen you take in at sea.

15. The tallest manmade structure is the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. And Mt Everest is more than ten times taller than it.

16. The Himalayan Mountain has been both skied and snowboarded down.

17. It has also been mapped by Google. They did it in 2011.

18. In 2005, a helicopter landed on Mt Everest. It made contact with the summit for two minutes.

19. Both phone call and tweet has been placed from the top of the mountain. The first phone call took place in 2013 whereas the first tweet was sent in 2011.

20. In 1999, Babu Chiri Sherpa spent 21 hours on the summit. The longest stay ever.

21. A wedding has also been held on Mt Everest. In 2004, Moni Mule Pati and Pem Dorjee Sherpa, part of the Rotary Centennial Everest Expedition, married each other when they reached the top.

22. The world’s highest mountain is also the world’s dirtiest mountain. It’s estimated that about 50 tons of waste are littered all over it. So, a rule has been enforced. Every climber must carry down 8 kg of waste during their descent. Otherwise they will lose their deposit money.

23. And, the most shocking fact is: Mt Everest is not the tallest mountain on the earth. Mt Everest is the highest because its top is the highest point on the earth. But if the length from the base to the summit is measured, it’s not the tallest mountain. The privilege goes to Mauna Kea (10,200 m), a Hawaiian inactive volcano, whose part above sea level is just 4,205 m.
