The verdant Chandragiri Hills, rising to an elevation of 2551 metres at the southwestern edge of Kathmandu, has become a popular destination for day tours after the installation of a cable car connecting Chandragiri with Thankot. The base of the hill lies about half an hour’s drive from the main city. One needs to trek for about three hours or take a few minutes (10-12 mins) ride on the cable car to reach the hill top. Frequented by locals and tourists alike, the hill has an ancient Hindu temple Bhaleshwar Mahadev dedicated to Lord Shiva, a view tower, restaurant and a children’s park. According to local legend, King Prithvi Narayan Shah, the ruler of Gorkha who unified Nepal, visited this temple before he laid siege to Kathmandu. From the top one can enjoy 360 degree views of Kathmandu valley and the surrounding hills and mountains. During winter, one is presented with a spectacular view from the ridge top, an unbroken chain of snow- capped Himalayan peaks stretching endlessly in the horizon. Chandragiri Hills is also one of the Popular Day Hikes around Kathmandu Valley.
Other popular viewpoints that lie close to Kathmandu include Lakuri Bhanjyang(1955m) and Pulchowki Hill (2750m) in Lalitpur, Shivapuri Hill(2563m), Jamacho Peak (2105m) and Champa Devi Danda (2285m). These hills are also popular among day hikers and bird watching groups. The trails are filled with dense forests, terraced fields, Buddhist and Hindu shrines and often times a solitary village. A hike up to any of these hills makes up for a delightful excursion, one filled with bird songs and colorful orchid and rhododendron blooms. Breathtaking views of the entire valley and rolling hills and mountains can be enjoyed from the top.
