Tihar

Tihar

Ask a Hindu Nepali, what is the ‘ Tihar ‘? He or she would say it is the festival of lights. Being a Hindu Nepali just like he or she, I feel the ‘ Tihar ‘ is much more than this. The following reasons support my statement that the Tihar is not only about lights.

First, the ‘ Tihar ‘ lasts for 5 days and is concerned with animals, such as crow, dog, cow, and ox. According to the Hindu mythology, the cawing of crow is looked upon as grief and sadness in one’s life. In order to avoid this, the Hindu Nepali worships crow by offering eatables on the roof of his or her house in the first day of the Tihar. In the second day, a dog is worshipped because it is believed that when the Hindu Nepali dies, the dog guides the soul of the dead to the God of Death, called Yama, therefore, the significance of the dogs in the life of the Hindu Nepali is great. On the third day, the cow and goddess Laxmi are worshipped individually. The Hindus look upon the cow as an avatar of goddess Laxmi, the goddess of wealth. It is also on this day (the third day of the Tihar) that ‘ bhailo song ‘ is sung by the Hindu Nepalese women in the courtyards of houses in the evening in different parts of Nepal. Similarly, ‘ deusai song ‘ is sung by the Hindu Nepali men in different courtyards of houses. Even the tourists can sing these songs, and there is no restriction for the tourists, whether they are Christians, Jews, Muslims, or Buddhists. All tourists are welcomed. On the fourth day of the Tihar, the Hindus Nepali worship ox, and on the subsequent day, the Hindu Nepali sisters put ‘ Bhai Tika’ (sister puts ‘ tika ‘ on the forehead and garland around the neck of Hindu Nepali brothers for their long life)

This year, 2014, ‘ Tihar ‘ falls in October and starts on 21 October and ends on 25 October. October is a peak season, and if you are touring to Nepal in these dates, you will get an opportunity to sing ‘ bhailo ‘ and ‘ deusai’ songs along with Hindu Nepali men and women. You will enjoy singing these songs, and if you know how to play the guitar, it will be an added advantage. The guitar has always been a favorite musical instrument among the Nepalese because every Nepali song is accompaed by the sound of the guitar.
